Tom gets a lot of slack from being a Pat that lives in NYC sporting a Yankee cap to crying in an ESPN interview because he was picked in the 6th round of the draft. But the truth is, he's pretty bad-ass.
From his career with the Patriots to his stellar endorsement deals with Stetson, Citizen, SmartWater…and now UGG, Tom has a nice arsenal of brands under his cap. However, his best, most brand affirming endorsement is that of his wife. If Giselle wasn't in his life, he might not be so popular…or so criticized.
This UGG ad doesn't even bother me. Its similar in look and feel to that of his Stetson ads (which I would have an issue with if I were a brand manager for UGG), but its pretty masculine and does focus too much on how UGLY those boots are. I don't think that Tom's relationship with UGG will sell a lot of boots, but it certainly does hurt his own brand.
Check out some of UGG for men styles here. They're actually some shoes that aren't too bad. HEY UGG – when advertising men's shoes don't showcase a shoe that looks like the style women have unfortunately been wearing for the past 10 years – they're ugly on women and even worse on men. Differentiate your brand! Even if your wife is Giselle, you still don't want to dress like her.
